2017 Silver Eagle Proof - 2020 West Point Hoard Header

This story is a continuation from a very popular hoard that was released to the market last year, the 2019 West Point Mint Hoard. You may recall the Mint took surplus 2016 West Point Proof Silver Eagles located in their vaults and sold them to bulk dealers by sealed bid generating millions in much-needed revenue. This second sale was just conducted in June 2020, again in sealed bid fashion to only a handful of bulk account buyers. More details will be released by the Mint in their upcoming official press release, but what I can tell you is this second sale contained coins dated 2016-2019, and included West Point Silver Eagles, Gold Eagles, Platinum Eagles, Gold Buffaloes and 225th Anniversary 4 Coin American Liberty Medal Sets.

Prior to 2019, the Mint would “de-trash” (melt) their surplus coins versus selling the coins but it finally realized that it would be less costly to sell surplus coins in competitive sealed-bid auctions.

My supplier was successful in purchasing some of the 2017 West Point Proof Silver Eagles, and these are labeled in the special West Point Mint Hoard pedigree just like the 2016 implied 2019 coin. Since these were sold in 2020, the label will read 2017 implied 2020 West Point Mint Hoard and offers collectors another opportunity to collect this special release at a great price. Comparing the 2016 with the 2017 figures, the mintage of the 2017 Proof Silver Eagle listed in the US Redbook is only 440,596 coins, which is lower than the 2016 by 155,247 units making it much rarer. Additionally, there were 32,334 less of the 2017 surplus coins sold compared to the 2016 surplus coins sold last year so the 2017 hoard may represent better value. Given the upward valuations on the 2016s that have occurred, the 2017s represent another great opportunity to purchase coins from a coveted limited series.
