The 2017 (2020) West Point Hoard Silver Eagle may just be one of the hottest and most unique releases of quite some time! For decades, the United States Mint would 'detrash' or meltdown any extra Silver Eagles that may be leftover from a particular year. At their 2019 year end audit, the Mint realized they had a small quantity of the 2017 Proof Silver Eagles left in their vaults. Instead of melting them down, the U.S. Mint decided to sell them off in a blind bid auction. This has only ever happened one other time in the entire history of the United States Mint (2016 West Point Mint Hoard). Good luck finding those for less than $300.
Each one of these coins has been certified by NGC to be from the West Point Mint Hoard and has the 2020 date on the certification label. This denotes that even though these are 2017 Proof Silver Eagles, they were not released until 2020! Each piece has been awarded the perfect certification of PF70 UCAM and has been hand signed by John Mercanti, the designer of the Silver Eagle!
