The 1988 4pc Gold American Eagle Proof Set is probably one of the most important Proof Gold Sets a collector could own. It is the very first time the U.S. Mint struck Proof Gold American Eagles in 4 coin sets. Up until 1988, only the Mint-State gold coins were struck in all four denominations ($5, $10, $25, $50). Not to mention back in 1988, the U.S. Mint struck the date on their gold coins in Roman Numerals. They only did this for six years from 1986-1991. This makes 1988 an aggressively sought after year.

It is also interesting to note that prior to 1994, the U.S. Mint struck the fractional proof gold coins ($5, $10, $25 pieces) at the Philadelphia Mint and the one-ounce ($50 piece) was struck at West Point. Today, all Gold American Eagle Proofs, regardless of size, are struck at West Point.

Each coin in this set has been independently certified by the Numismatic Guarantee Corporation (NGC) as an absolutely flawless PF 70 Ultra Cameo specimen. In order for coins to receive a flawless PF 70 grade, there must be no post-production imperfections under 5x magnification. Not to mention, in order for each coin to receive the coveted “Ultra Cameo” designation, each coin must possess an intense frosted finish on both sides and highly polished fields that accent the raised devices.

Are PF 70 Ultra Cameo coins rare?

Absolutely! Not only are Proof Gold American Eagles struck in far fewer quantities than their Mint-State counterparts but only a small percentage of those grade flawless PF 70 Ultra Cameo. That is why they are often referred to as “Investment Grade” coins.

This particular set is 1 of about 50 1988 4pc Gold American Eagle Proof sets known to be hand-signed by 42nd U.S. Treasurer Anna Cabral. As the 42nd U.S. Treasurer, Anna Cabral is NGC’s most prominent signer. Not to mention, her hand-signed signature label coins are some of the scarcest signature series coins found in the marketplace.

Considering that other 1988 sets signed by less prominent signers have sold for nearly $14,000 online at other national retailers, this set seems to be an incredible value.
