1904-O $10 Gold Liberty NGC AU58
New Orleans Gold With a Passport Full of History
Some coins are rare because very few were made. Others are compelling because of where they were made, where they traveled and how remarkably well they survived. The 1904-O $10 Gold Liberty belongs firmly in the second category.
Struck during the final years of the Liberty Head Eagle series, this coin carries the celebrated “O” mintmark of the New Orleans Mint. While that single letter is modest in size, it gives the coin an entirely different personality. New Orleans gold has long been one of the most historically interesting—and enthusiastically collected—areas of American numismatics.
The 1904-O had the second-highest mintage of any With Motto $10 Liberty struck in New Orleans. Today, it is the second-most obtainable issue of the type, trailing only the 1903-O. That relative availability makes it an excellent entry point into genuine New Orleans gold, yet it remains far removed from anything one could call ordinary.
In fact, the survival story of the 1904-O is especially fascinating. Hundreds of examples have returned to the United States from overseas sources in recent decades. Like many classic American gold coins, these pieces were exported and held in foreign bank reserves, where they escaped the widespread melting that claimed so much of America’s pre-1933 gold coinage.
This particular example has been certified AU58 by NGC—one of the most appealing grades for collectors who want strong Mint State character without stepping into the considerably higher price range of a certified Uncirculated coin. AU58 represents the very top of the About Uncirculated scale. Such coins generally retain nearly complete mint luster, with only slight friction on the highest points of the design.
The 1904-O is also one of the better-produced New Orleans Eagles. The reverse is typically well defined, with strong detail through the eagle’s legs and feather tips. The obverse may show some softness around Liberty’s central hair curls and several of the surrounding stars, but that is characteristic of the issue—not necessarily evidence of circulation.
Original examples can display particularly attractive color, ranging from rich orange-gold to green-gold and subtle rose hues. Better pieces also possess the frosty mint bloom usually associated with Philadelphia gold coins of the same era. Since many surviving 1904-O Eagles are heavily marked, an attractive AU58 can offer an especially satisfying balance of preservation, originality and value.
There is even a tantalizing footnote to the issue. One extraordinary 1904-O Eagle has been proposed as a possible branch-mint Proof or Specimen strike. Its unusually sharp details and rich satin finish are accompanied by an old envelope reportedly identifying it as the first gold coined at the New Orleans Mint in 1904. Although separate from the regular production coins, its existence adds another layer of intrigue to an already fascinating date.
There is also an interesting value proposition hiding beneath the surface. While the 1904-O is considered one of the more obtainable $10 Liberty Eagles from New Orleans, it remains genuinely scarce when compared with the mass-market Philadelphia issues of the same era. “Common” is always relative in numismatics—and what qualifies as available within the New Orleans series can still be remarkably elusive beside its Philadelphia counterparts.
Yet collectors can often acquire a certified 1904-O for a price relatively close to that of the most common Philadelphia-minted $10 Liberty. That creates an unusual opportunity. Instead of purchasing another widely available Philadelphia example, a collector can step into historic New Orleans gold—complete with the coveted “O” mintmark, a much smaller surviving population and a considerably more interesting story—without making a dramatic jump in price.
For collectors, the appeal is easy to understand: nearly Mint State preservation, almost half an ounce of classic American gold, a design from the closing chapter of the Liberty Head era and the unmistakable “O” mintmark of New Orleans.
The 1904-O may be one of the more obtainable New Orleans Eagles, but that is precisely what makes it so compelling. For a relatively modest premium over an ordinary Philadelphia issue, collectors can own a coin that is far scarcer, far more distinctive and, in our opinion, much more interesting.
