The 1882-S Morgan Silver Dollar was struck at the San Francisco Mint with a business-strike mintage of 9,250,000. Designed by George T. Morgan, the coin features a left-facing head of Liberty in a Phrygian cap encircled by cotton and wheat, with an eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. Struck in 90% silver, it weighs 26.73 grams, measures 38.1 mm, and contains 0.77344 troy ounces of silver. San Francisco Morgans of this era are renowned for their outstanding quality of strike and luster.
This particular 1882-S is an exceptional quality Mint State 62 example housed in a PCGS Gen 3.1 Old Green Holder. With this coin being housed in a original PCGS Gen 3.1 holder we know this coin was certified between March 1993 and September of 1998, when grading standards were much more strict. Collectors would be hard press to find a nicer brilliant uncirculated Morgan Silver Dollar at this price point.
The 1882-S is one of the most available Morgan dollars in high grade, thanks to large quantities preserved in bags for generations, making it a favorite of type collectors and of those building a date-and-mintmark set who want a superb example at reasonable cost. It is celebrated for frosty, sometimes semi-prooflike surfaces, bold luster, and sharp strikes. Even so, true superb gems at the MS-68 level are condition rarities that stand well above the plentiful supply of ordinary Mint State coins.
