1867 $3 Gold NGC PF61
Only 50 Minted!

Rare Reconstruction Era Proof

The $3 gold piece has always been a fascinating series for collectors. Initially designed to facilitate the purchase of rolls of postage stamps (100 at 3 cents each) it enjoyed a considerable lifespan from 1854 to 1889.

While production started out heavy in 1854, these numbers decreased significantly by the time of the Civil War and would never regain the strength it had at the start. During Reconstruction there was little use for the denomination, and only 2600 business strikes were made along with 50 Proofs.

This rare PF61 example resides in an NGC holder. Typically 1867 Proofs come with weakly struck dates and this coin is an exception to that rule, featuring a boldly struck date all the way through.

A tremendous rarity that will be right at home in any extraordinary collection.
