Understanding PROOF Coin Designations

Ultra Cameo:
To receive an "Ultra Cameo" (or "Deep Cameo PCGS") designation, a coin must exhibit strong and unbroken frosted devices on both the obverse and the reverse. A robust contrast between the mirrored fields and frosted devices must be consistent and undiminished in all areas. Even the smallest amount of brilliance or fade in the recessed areas of the design will prevent a coin from obtaining this designation.
Ultra cameo coins are typically the first coins minted in a set. Proof coin dies quickly lose their ability to make this beautiful cameo finish after printing only a few hundred coins. This method of minting makes ultra cameo coins inherently more rare than the coins minted later in the set.
PF70 Designation Meaning
Coins are graded on a scale from 1-70, with 70 being considered flawless museum quality. Coins are assessed by an independent grading service that employs world-class numismatic experts to individually inspect coins in a controlled environment. During the coin grading process, each expert’s assessment is then added into a database where a consensus on the coin’s grade is reached.
Why are PF70 coins rare?
For a coin to achieve a flawless PF70 grade by NGC, it must have ZERO post-production imperfections at 5x magnification. With proof coins having vibrant mirror-like finishes, the surfaces of the coins are very delicate and are susceptible to fingerprints and scratches.
