"PROOF-LIKE Gold... The FIRST STRIKES of Classic U.S. Coinage"
Proof-like coins are regular issue “business strike” coins that have the appearance of proofs, with highly reflective, mirror-like fields and enhanced visual contrast. They’re generally found among the first strikes from a freshly-polished coin die, and they’re both amazingly rare and attractively undervalued. Some experts see them as one of the last remaining under-appreciated classes of coins in numismatic investment markets.
Proof-like specimens almost always represent a tiny fraction of the total population of issues graded by NGC and PCGS.
Take for instance this 1894 $10 Gold Liberty certified by NGC as MS 61 PL. Out of 2,470,735 coins originally minted only 117 have been certified as PROOF-LIKE examples in all grades by BOTH NGC and PCGS combined!!
Proof Like examples are so rare that only THREE 1894 $10 "PROOF-LIKE" Gold Liberties have been auctioned off in the last 20+ years.
In MS 61 PL there are only 49 coins known and just 48 known finer in the world. The finest known example is a single specimen graded NGC MS 64.
