The United States Mint first released Silver American Eagles on November 24, 1986. Each coin is struck from one Troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver. Over the years, Proof Silver American Eagles have been struck at three different mint locations: Philadelphia, San Francisco, and West Point.

For the first seven years, 1986 to 1992, the Proof Silver American Eagles were struck exclusively at the San Franciso Mint. We call these the "Classic San Francisco Proof Silver American Eagle Series."
